Tech for Road Safety: AI-Driven & Energy-Efficient Solutions

IEEE Bangalore Section invites students, researchers, professionals, and innovators to participate in the Road Safety Innovation Challenge, organized as part of IEEE BHTC 2026.

This challenge aligns with the conference theme “AI for Sustainability”, focusing on intelligent, energy-efficient, and human-centric technologies that enhance road safety, improve urban mobility, and support sustainable cities.

About IEEE BHTC 2026

The 6th edition of the IEEE Bangalore Humanitarian Technology Conference (BHTC) is a premier international conference dedicated to addressing sustainability challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • Location: Bangalore, India
  • Dates: March 27–29, 2026
  • Theme: AI for Sustainability – Enabling Smarter and More Livable Urban Futures

Challenge Objective

The Road Safety Innovation Challenge aims to foster innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions that:

  • Enhance road and pedestrian safety
  • Optimize energy usage in road infrastructure
  • Improve traffic efficiency and urban resilience
  • Promote inclusivity for pedestrians and elderly road users

Problem Statements / Tracks

Participants may choose one of the following tracks or propose an open innovation idea aligned with road safety:

  • 1. Technology-Enabled Traffic Enforcement & Penalization: AI-driven solutions for detecting and enabling enforcement of traffic violations such as illegal parking, road encroachments, and unsafe road usage. The focus is on improving compliance, reducing congestion, and enhancing road safety through intelligent, scalable automation.
  • 2. Emergency Vehicle Green Corridor Automation: Smart, automated systems to enable real-time creation of green corridors for emergency vehicles using AI, traffic signal coordination, and connected road infrastructure, ensuring faster and safer emergency response.
  • 3. Predictive Road Safety & Risky Driver Behaviour Analysis: AI-based solutions to predict unsafe driving behaviour, accident-prone zones, or high-risk scenarios using vehicle, infrastructure, or urban mobility data enabling preventive and proactive road safety interventions.
  • 4. Assistive & Climate-Resilient Road Safety Solutions: Innovative technologies that enhance road safety for pedestrians, elderly citizens, and vulnerable road users, including solutions for safe navigation and risk prediction during urban floods or extreme weather conditions.
  • 5. Open Innovation on Road Safety: Open-ended innovations addressing road safety challenges across urban and highway ecosystems. Participants are encouraged to propose novel, AI-enabled, energy-efficient, and scalable solutions beyond predefined problem statements.
Indicative areas may include prevention, detection, response, and inclusivity in road safety; participants are free to define their own problem space.
